GSMA & CAICT: China to Become World's Largest 5G Market by 2025

Updated:2017/6/28 17:21

Recent research from GSMA Intelligence and China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) showed that the Chinese operators will gradually launch 5G services before 2020, and China is expected to become the largest 5G market around the word before 2025.

GSMA has released the latest research report, China's 5G Report: Development Outlook and Regional Comparison, at Mobile World Congress Shanghai on June 28, which explores China and other leading Asian markets' recent outlook for 5G tests and commercial application and makes a forecast for potential 5G use cases in the consumer market and enterprise market.

China prepares for world's largest-scale 5G deployments

Before launching 5G in 2020, China's mobile operators planned to carry out 5G network phased tests during 2017 to 2019; In 2025, the 5G connections are estimated to reach 428 million by 2025, accounting for 39 percent of 1.1 billion global 5G connections.

The Chinese operators expect to deploy "independent" 5G network, including 5G devices, backbone connections link and core network through building new base stations.

Some other Asian markets, the report says, are also considering about another option of deploying the dependent 5G network which can be operated on the existing infrastructure, adopted low-power wireless access nodes in user's high density area and realize 4G and 5G services at the same time.

5G brings new consumer services and drives enterprise revolution

5G network deployments in the early stages will focus on 4G network capacity expansion so as to support the increasingly growing cellular data flow demands. In addition, 5G will also generate enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services, such as 4K/8K ultra-high-definition video, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications.

Although some of the services have need for the appearance of the devices, smartphone is still expected to become the main 5G interface.
