Google's Android KitKat could lead to more sweet product names

Updated:2013/9/9 09:50

Google's (GOOG) decision to name the next version of its Android operating system after Nestle's (NSRGY) KitKat chocolate and wafer candy is a brilliant marketing move for both companies. It also opens the door for a bunch more candy-themed software releases.

Google and Nestle announced earlier this week that they are teaming up to promote the latest Android software for smartphones and tablets.

To mark the release of Android KitKat, more than 50 million specially branded KitKat bars will be available in 19 countries, including the U.S. The wrappers will lead consumers to a website where they can win prizes, including Google Nexus 7 tablets and credits to spend at Google Play, Google's online store for apps, games, music, movies and books. Plus, a limited number of Android robot-shaped KitKat bars will be offered as prizes in select markets.

Google started naming Android versions after sweets starting with the release of Android Cupcake in 2009. It has continued the naming convention in alphabetical order with Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

Google previously indicated that version 4.4 of the OS would be called Key Lime Pie, but surprised observers by choosing the trademarked brand name of a popular chocolate treat.

Android KitKat is due out in October.

Google told the BBC that it had come up with the naming idea and that neither side is paying the other. Nestle owns the worldwide brand and licenses it to Hershey (HSY) to produce candy bars in the U.S.

Many Google employees didn't learn of the new name until a statue of the Android mascot made to look like a KitKat bar was unveiled at the company's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters.

The KitKat announcement prompted snide jokes online about how a segmented chocolate candy underscores Android's fragmentation.

Others said they couldn't wait for more Android flavors bearing the names of sugary treats.
